Dogs sniff their backyards when they get home to get information and re-mark their territory. As a beagle, Jimmy uses his powerful sense of smell, so he can understand what has happened since he was at doggie day care. He will try to identify any potential threats or other animals. It is thought that dogs can even sense when there are pests underground.
Beagles were traditionally bread for hunting small game like rabbits so this comes naturally to him. Allowing your dog to explore and sniff around can help reduce any kind of stress and anxiety.
After Jimmy checks the yard, he heads into the house to his PawSheets® covered dog bed – and to make sure no one has been in his bed. Once his sniffing is complete, Jimmy snuggles in and sighs – there’s no place like home!
Fun beagle facts:
- When beagles ears are drawn out, they reach to the end of their nose. These long ears catch scent particles and put them close to the nose.
- Beagles are one of the most vocal dog breeds with the ability to make three different sounds: standard bark, yodel bark and a howl.
- The white tip on the beagles’ tails was bred into the breed so that they could be visible when they had their noses to the ground during a hunt.
- The Beagle Brigade is a team of beagles and their handlers, who are part of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. They inspect luggage at US airports, searching for all types of agricultural products
- President Lyndon Johnson owned beagles - Him, Her, Freckles and Edgar.
