Eliminate Dog Bed Odor: Easy Way to Freshen Your Pet’s Bed and Your Home

If the first thing you smell when you walk into your home is “dog” - you have a dog odor problem. But it may not be your dog that stinks– but your dog’s bed!

Dog beds collect all kinds of nasty stuff - bacteria, parasites, fleas, hair, drool, urine and fecal matter – in a very short amount of time. If you dog goes to the dog park, plays in the yard or spends time outside, there’s a good chance that some outdoor debris will also be deposited on the bed. Pretty disgusting.

According to a post by the American Kennel Club, dog beds should be washed one a week. Of course, it depends on your dog’s coat, their lifestyle and if family members have allergies. However, removing the cover for washing, especially with larger beds, can be a time-consuming, laborious effort.

If you're tired of lingering doggie smells in your home and dread the thought of having to struggle with the dog bed washing process, we have an easy and effective solution for you – sheets for your dog’s bed.

Eliminate Dog Bed Odor: Why PawSheets Covers Make It Effortless

Unlike the “removable” cover that comes on your dog’s bed, PawSheets’ covers can be quickly removed and washed and put back on in little time – with little effort. This ensures that your dogs bed stays fresh and your living space stink free. It’s one simple step that makes it easy for you to keep a clean fresh home. It’s really that simple!

"One of my dogs is a very smelly girl. Bed covers in the past have failed the 'wash out the smell’ test. These particular sheet covers are great! They wash up beautifully and the doggie smell is absolutely gone!" - Pamela D.

Dog beds are expensive and throwing them in the trash is not only expensive but adds additional waste to landfills.

Keeping your dog bed odor-free

The best way to keep a fresh dog bed is to never let it get too stinky. Start with PawSheets on a new bed, and you’ll have the dog bed odor-free for years. However, If you have a smelly bed, you can wash it and remove odors by doing  the following:

  1. Remove the cover (if you can). Shake it out and machine wash with a detergent. (There are specific pet detergents for hair and smell available on Amazon). For extra freshness, consider adding 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to the washer or fabric softener dispenser, and sprinkle in 1/2 cup baking soda.
  2. If the inner mattress is washable and fits in your washer, add it with the cover. If it’s too big, fill your tub with hot water and add a mild detergent plus 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar.
  3. Let the bed soak for about 15 minutes, fully submerged.
  4. Drain soapy water and refill with fresh water to rinse. Squees the mattress to get out the soap.
  5. Air dry the mattress – best done outside on a dry, sunny day.

When your cover and bed are dry, give it a sniff test. If any odor remains, try a pet-safe deodorizer. Avoid products like Febreze that aren’t safe for pets.

As I see it, there are three ways to get rid of the doggie bed smell:

Trash the dog bed - not a good solution as $$$ and goes in landfill

✔️Wash bed and cover – not easy if you have a large dog bed

✔️Use a fitted dog bed sheet  - PawSheets fit most dog beds (even the Big Barker!)

As the founder of PawSheets, I created fitted sheets for dog beds to deal with the odor issue. PawSheets are a great way to keep the surface of a dog bed clean, but they will not prevent a stinky bed from sending out stink signals. The best way to keep the dog bed clean and odor free, is to never let it get too dirty. Simply use an easy to remove and wash dog bed cover or sheet. And make sure to change the cover (or PawSheets) at least once a week.

Can your dog's bed pass the "sniff" test? 🤨
