Is It Safe to Give My Dog CBD? (Updated)

CBD Oil for Dogs

It seems like there is a lot of information available on the use of CBD oil to treat pet ailments. We are sharing some information that we hope you find useful. Keep in mind you should always check with your veterinarian before giving your dog any supplement.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It can be supplied as CBD oil with only CBD as the active ingredient. That means no psychoactivity as there is no THC. CBD oil has found to have some beneficial effects in humans, such as pain relief. There are also studies that show promising results for using CBD supplements to manage a dog’s anxiety, pain and seizures.

Not long ago, the FDA approved a cannabis-derived medicine to treat epilepsy in humans - Epidiolex. This offers implications for humans as well as our pets.

Buying CBD

CBD for dogs comes in different formats - the most popular are oil tinctures and chewy treats. According to Dr. Gary Richter of Holistic Veterinary Care the most important thing is to check is the ingredients and purity of the product. He advises looking for a “Certificate of Analysis,” which should show what is in the product, as well as the guaranteed potency. And, Dr. Richter also recommends checking with your vet before starting any kind of CBD to your dog.

As the market is not regulated, we need to do our own research. Take the time to learn about the potential benefits of CBD supplements in dogs and how to be sure that the CBD products you find will be safe for your dog.

Please share your thoughts and experiences.
